On September 9, 2025, CP Radhakrishnan became India’s 15th Vice President. He’s taking over from Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down in July because of health problems. Radhakrishnan, backed by the NDA, got around 452 votes. His opponent, retired Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, ended up with about 300 votes. Fifteen votes didn’t count, and nearly all members of Parliament voted turnout was roughly 98 percent. The outcome, though anticipated, underscored the ruling alliance’s dominance and left little doubt about the decisiveness of Radhakrishnan’s win.
Radhakrishnan have spent many years in politics and is regarded as someone with wide experience in public life. As Vice President, he will also serve as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, where his main task will be to keep order and guide debates. Recent sessions have seen repeated disruptions, so attention will now be on how he manages heated exchanges while preserving the dignity of the House.
Radhakrishnan is expected to take the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan later this week. Over the next five years, he will have the responsibility of guiding the mood of parliamentary debates and making sure legislative business moves ahead smoothly.
