On 21st February 2024, due to the recent passing of the esteemed legal luminary and Senior Advocate Fali S Nariman has left a deep void in the legal fraternity. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed profound condolences, remarking on Nariman’s legacy as a towering intellectual and a mentor to many in the legal profession.
The CJI described Nariman as a voice that embodied the conscience of a generation, characterized by fearless expression, clarity, and candor. He further acknowledged Nariman’s role as a nurturing father figure to aspiring lawyers and judges, highlighting his kindness and affection.
Former Chief Justice of India N V Ramana also paid tribute to Nariman, expressing deep sorrow over his sudden demise. Ramana lauded Nariman’s unwavering commitment to upholding constitutional values throughout his illustrious career. He credited Nariman as a beacon of conscience for judicial institutions, known for his outspokenness and dedication to constitutional principles. Ramana emphasized Nariman’s enduring legacy, which will continue to inspire future generations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences and tweeted on 21st February 2024 that, “Fali Nariman Ji was among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals. He devoted his life to making justice accessible to common citizens. I am pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”
Fali S Nariman, an eminent jurist and veteran senior advocate of the Supreme Court, passed away in Delhi at the age of 95. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian jurisprudence, as his arguments have profoundly influenced numerous landmark judgments.
Recognized for his contributions, Nariman was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007. His autobiography reflects his unwavering commitment to secularism and civil liberties, epitomizing his lifelong dedication to the principles of justice and equality.
