On February 22, 2025, the Ministry of Law & Justice decided to revise the Advocates (Amendment) Bill 2025 and hold fresh public consultations following widespread protests by lawyers and bar bodies.

The Union Law Ministry informed the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday, acknowledging concerns from the legal community. “Considering the number of suggestions and concerns received, the consultation process will be concluded now. The revised draft will be processed afresh for stakeholder consultation,” stated the Law Ministry.

In response, the BCI urged lawyers to halt protests. “In light of the same, the BCI has now appealed to the lawyers and bar bodies to refrain from further protests and strikes.” Law Minister Arjun Meghwal assured that contentious provisions would be thoroughly reviewed.

The BCI also called on Bar Associations to resume work from Monday, February 24, 2025. “In view of the latest development and the government’s stand, the BCI requests all Bar Associations to resume court work from Monday,” the statement read.

The Bill was initially open for public consultation on February 13 via the Department of Legal Affairs’ website but faced strong opposition. After receiving significant backlash, the Law Ministry agreed to reconsider the amendments. The legal community now awaits a revised draft addressing their concerns.
