On 4th August, 2025, the Central Government has officially notified the appointment of five judicial officers as Judges of the Allahabad High Court. The newly appointed judges are:
- Pramod Kumar Srivastava,
- Abdul Shahid,
- Santosh Rai,
- Tej Pratap Tiwari,
- Zafeer Ahmad
These appointments come in response to the recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium earlier this year. Specifically, the Collegium recommended the names of judicial officers Srivastava, Rai, and Ahmad on July 1, while the proposals for the appointments of Judicial Officers Tiwari and Shahid were made earlier, on April 2.
These appointments are a step toward addressing the acute shortage of judges currently being faced by the Allahabad High Court. As of August 4, 2025, the court is functioning with only 79 judges, including the Chief Justice, despite having a sanctioned strength of 160. This significant gap in the sanctioned versus actual strength has placed considerable strain on the functioning and efficiency of the court. The addition of these five judges is expected to provide some relief to the institution, which is grappling with a heavy caseload and a growing backlog of cases.
