Bombay High Court: CBFC to Clarify Objections to Film Inspired by Yogi Adityanath

The Bombay High Court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to clearly communicate its objections to the film Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi, which is reportedly based on the life of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The Court ordered the CBFC to specify by August 11 which scenes or dialogues it considers objectionable. The film’s producers, Samrat Cinematics, must then inform the Court on August 12 about the changes they are proposing to be made.

The film, inspired by the book The Monk Who Became Chief Minister, was denied certification by the CBFC’s Examining Committee. The filmmakers challenged this, saying the CBFC failed to provide clear reasons for rejection, violating Section 4(2) of the Cinematograph Act, which requires the Board to inform applicants about necessary modifications.

During hearings, the Division Bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale expressed disappointment with the CBFC’s vague response and emphasized that the Board cannot delay decisions or demand approvals beyond its authority. The filmmakers also alleged that CBFC officials improperly insisted on a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the UP Chief Minister’s Office, a requirement not found in the Cinematograph Act or Certification Rules.

The CBFC, represented by Senior Advocate Abhay Khandeparkar, clarified that the filmmakers are free to approach the Revising Committee. He explained that the rejection was not solely due to the film being based on a political figure, but because some scenes might be defamatory or objectionable. However, the Court noted that the CBFC must follow procedure and issue a detailed, lawful decision.

The filmmakers claim the delays have caused serious financial damage, with Rs 30 crore already spent and another Rs 10 crore allocated for promotions. The film was originally set to release on August 1, 2025. The Court has emphasized the CBFC’s responsibility to act within legal timelines and ensure that filmmakers’ constitutional rights are respected while upholding regulatory standards. The Court has re-notified the matter to August 14, 2025.
