On 26th May 2025, the Allahabad High Court passed an order in State of U.P. v. Asok Pande, imposing sanctions on advocate Asok Pande for his repeated acts of contempt. The Court sentenced him to six months of simple imprisonment along with a fine of ₹2,000 for using abusive and derogatory language, including calling judges “goondas,” during open court proceedings in 2021. Further, he was found to have appeared improperly dressed and failed to comply with the Court’s direction.

Earlier, the Court had passed its judgment on 10th April, 2025, and issued a notice asking why he should not be debarred from practising before the High Court. In response, he filed an application seeking recall of the judgment and requested leniency on the ground that legal practice is his only source of livelihood. Additionally, he cited the Supreme Court’s decision in Prashant Bhusan’s Contempt judgment as a precedent, requesting a similar punishment of a token fine. However, the Court rejected this plea, considering the fact that Pande had already been convicted in a 2017 contempt case and was facing six additional contempt proceedings.

The Court found no merit in his recall application, terming his apology insincere. Consequently, it confirmed the sentence and barred him from entering or practising in the Allahabad and Lucknow benches of the High Court for a period of three years.
