IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched AIKosha and the IndiaAI compute portal, on IndiaAI mission’s anniversary, offering GPUs at just ₹67/hour to democratize AI access on 6th March, 2025.
He highlighted the advantages this would bring to startups, developers, researchers, and students. Citing India’s economical moon mission, Vaishnaw asserted that the nation would follow the same cost-efficient approach in building its foundational model.
India aims to develop its own GPUs within 3-4 years to compete globally, with usage costs under ₹100/hour, said Minister Vaishnaw. MeitY Secretary Krishnan highlighted that 45% of India AI Mission funds are dedicated to the AI Compute Portal, a key driver for advancing AI adoption and contributing to the 2047 Viksit Bharat vision.
MeitY has taken significant steps in AI development by launching a competency framework for officials, an acceleration program for startups, and awarding AI fellows. The IndiaAI mission, backed by Rs 10,371.92 crore, focuses on fostering AI innovation through public-private partnerships.
