Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL) of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has partnered with SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, to offer Starlink broadband internet services in India. This was a response to Bharti Airtel’s recent move where they had partnered with SpaceX to bring Starlink equipment to Airtel stores, to enhance business connectivity and rural access in India. Their partnership also aims to integrate Starlink with Airtel’s network and explore mutual infrastructure benefits.
JPL stated that the implementation of this Agreement is subject to SpaceX receiving its independent approvals to introduce and sell Starlink in India. Once regulatory clearance is granted, Jio and SpaceX will engage in discussions and collaborative efforts to assess how Starlink’s satellite broadband capabilities can enhance Jio’s service portfolio.
Simultaneously, Jio will explore ways in which it can contribute to the expansion and efficiency of SpaceX’s direct consumer and enterprise services. The partnership reflects a strategic approach to leveraging satellite technology for broader digital inclusion and improved connectivity in the Indian market.
Jio has formally stated that it will distribute Starlink equipment through its retail outlets and will introduce a robust support framework to assist customers with service activation and installation. The company highlighted that Starlink would reinforce the capabilities of JioAirFiber and JioFiber, ensuring the seamless provision of high-speed internet in hard-to-reach areas in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Moreover, Jio and SpaceX are evaluating potential synergies to optimize their respective infrastructure for the continued growth of India’s digital ecosystem.
