Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave announced his decision to retire from the legal profession after an impressive 48 years at the Bar. He shared this significant news through a personal WhatsApp message to his colleagues and peers.
“In reflecting upon my journey, after spending 48 glorious years at the Bar and just celebrating my 70th wonderful birthday, I have decided to step back from the practice of law”.
In a subsequent conversation with Bar and Bench, Dave elaborated that there was no singular catalyst for his decision; rather, he feels it is time to create space for younger lawyers to take the reins.
“There is no specific trigger for this choice. I am now 70 years old. It is time for young minds to come forward and carry on the work,” he stated emphatically.
He confirmed that he would not return to the legal field, even if important cases arise, emphasizing that he has been contemplating retirement to devote quality time to his grandchildren.
Looking ahead, Dave indicated that he plans to engage more actively in societal welfare and pursue his personal passions. He expressed deep gratitude to his wife, Ami, for her unwavering support and encouragement throughout his illustrious career.
Specifically, he mentioned his desire to adopt a taluk in Sankheda, a region near Baroda in Gujarat. “I am eager to adopt this area and contribute positively through initiatives in agriculture, housing, and community development,” he stated with enthusiasm. Although he will remain based in Delhi, he intends to travel frequently between the two locations, balancing his commitment to both places.
Dushyant Dave’s legal career commenced in 1977, shortly after completing his studies, when he enrolled at the Bar. He initially established his practice in Ahmedabad, focusing on civil and constitutional matters, before relocating to Delhi in the 1990s to broaden his influence. In 1994, he was designated a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India, further solidifying his reputation in the legal community.
Over the years, he cultivated a diverse and impactful practice in the Supreme Court, engaging in some of the most pivotal cases of his era. His expertise also extended to arbitration, where he excelled, earning respect in various sectors of the legal field. Notably, he served as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association on three separate occasions—in 2014, 2019, and 2020—demonstrating his leadership and commitment to the profession.
Dave has been known for his candidness in addressing issues affecting both the Bar and the Bench. He didn’t shy away from critically engaging with the judiciary and the government on matters of public interest. Throughout his career, he participated in significant constitutional and public interest cases, making a lasting impact on the legal landscape.
In reflecting on his journey, he expressed profound gratitude to his colleagues and clients, remarking, my experience in the legal field has been filled with tremendous love and respect from the Bar and, foremost, from the Bench. Most importantly, the faith that clients have placed in me at various phases of my career has motivated me to strive to deliver the best services to each of them, whether pro-bono or otherwise.
He concluded his message by acknowledging his personal staff, whose dedication was instrumental in his success, leaves the profession with a sense of pride, confident that future generations of lawyers and judges will earnestly work to uphold the “much challenged” rule of law, which he believes is essential for justice in society.
