Reliance Industries and Meta have struck a joint venture worth around $100 million, a move that signals how quickly India’s artificial intelligence market is heating up. For Reliance, this is another big step after Jio in shaping the country’s digital economy. For Meta, it offers a way to bring its AI models closer to a market of over a billion people, many of whom are just beginning to explore enterprise technology.
The deal gives Reliance a 70% stake and Meta the remaining 30%. Reliance has reached telecom, retail, cloud infrastructure, and a strong grip on distribution. Meta brings its Llama models, which are designed for real-world use and can be adapted for Indian businesses. Together, they want to take AI out of research labs and put it into small offices, call centres, and even family-run companies that never imagined using such tools.
Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. and Hogan Lovells worked with Meta, while Reliance turned to Cooley LLP. These firms handled everything from competition law to data transfer rules, making sure the structure would pass regulatory scrutiny both in India and abroad. Their involvement shows how AI ventures now demand as much legal muscle as financial planning.
If the venture delivers on its promises, the impact could be far-reaching. Mid-sized firms often find advanced tech out of reach; this JV could change that by lowering costs and offering ready-to-use solutions.
That said, regulation looms large. India’s new data protection law is only the beginning, and questions around how AI models use, store, and process information are far from settled. Businesses will expect clarity, not just flashy tools. For the joint venture, success will depend as much on building trust as it will on delivering technology.
It’s too early to call this partnership a game-changer, but it has all the ingredients to become one. Affordable pricing, transparent governance, and solutions that actually solve local problems will decide whether Reliance and Meta can move AI adoption in India from buzzword to business reality.
