Justice Manmohan officially took oath as the 32nd Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on September 29, 2024. The ceremony took place in Raj Niwas, where Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena administered the oath. Among the attendees were Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and other prominent dignitaries, including High Court judges and high officials of the city.
On July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court of Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai recommended the elevation of Justice Manmohan to Chief Justice.
Justice Manmohan, who served as Acting Chief Justice since November 2023 following the elevation of his predecessor, Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, to the Supreme Court, was confirmed for this role by the Supreme Court Collegium in July 2024. His appointment was formalized by the Central Government on September 21, 2024.
Justice Manmohan, a respected figure in the legal fraternity, has had a distinguished career since enrolling with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987. He was elevated to the bench as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court and in 2009 he became a permanent judge.
He is set to retire on December 16, 2024. His legal journey and contributions have been notable, especially considering his background as the son of Jagmohan, a renowned bureaucrat-turned politician who served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
