Adverse Effects of Climate Change Need Serious Consideration: Justice BR Gavai

Justice B.R. Gavai, a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, during the inaugural session of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association’s International Conference on “Law and Technology: Sustainable Transport, Tourism, and Technological Innovations” held in Kumarakom, Kerala, emphasized the urgent necessity of addressing the climate crisis. He highlighted about the recent natural disasters that took place in Wayanad and Himachal Pradesh as a clear indications of escalating environmental challenges.

Justice Gavai noted that while national development is essential, it should not come at the expense of the environment. He underlined the moral duty to ensure that progress does not endanger the well-being of future generations. “Human beings have always been driven by greed, but this greed must be tempered, so it does not disregard the needs of future generations,” he stated.

Further the conference,  explored about the intersection of law, technology, and sustainable development, and also pointed out the risks of environmental degradation due to unchecked development. Justice Gavai’s remarks underscored the critical need to maintain a balance between advancement and environmental protection.
