On 14th August 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint silver medal, marking a significant setback in her Olympic journey. Originally set to be announced on August 13, the verdict was deferred by CAS until August 16, adding to the anticipation surrounding the case.

In Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat made history by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to reach the finals of an Olympic event, specifically in the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling category. However, her dreams of securing a gold medal were shattered when she was disqualified just hours before the final bout. The disqualification was a result of Vinesh being found 100 grams over the permissible weight limit, a minor discrepancy that had major consequences.

Vinesh sought a remedy by requesting a joint silver medal with Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman, whom she had defeated in the semifinals. Vinesh’s appeal to CAS centered on the argument that the 100-gram excess in weight was insignificant and did not confer any competitive advantage. She also highlighted logistical challenges, citing the long distance between the Olympic Games Village and the competition venue as a factor that prevented her from shedding the minimal excess weight in time.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President, PT Usha, expressed deep disappointment and surprise at the CAS decision to dismiss Vinesh’s appeal. Usha emphasized the unfairness of the outcome, particularly given the minor nature of the weight discrepancy and Vinesh’s exceptional performance leading up to the final. Despite her efforts, the ruling from CAS remained unfavorable, leaving Vinesh and her supporters disheartened.
