The India International Arbitration Centre (IIAC) was the Regional Partner for the Summit held at Bangunan Sulaiman, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from July 26-27, 2024 which had the theme of “Beyond Boundaries: The Rise of Asia in Global Dispute Resolution.”
During the Summit, IIAC signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with several international arbitration and mediation centers across Asia, including:
(i) Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution (AIADR), Malaysia;
(ii) Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (BICAM);
(iii) Maldives International Arbitration Centre (MIAC); and
(iv) Vietnam Traders Arbitration Centre (VTA).
Former Supreme Court judge Justice Hemant Gupta suggested that the ‘A’ in ADR should be interpreted as ‘Appropriate’ rather than ‘Alternative.’
In his address, Justice Gupta highlighted the need to adopt best practices, encourage international collaboration, and utilize the distinctive strengths of Asian arbitration institutions to improve the global ADR framework. He praised the Summit for highlighting Asia’s significant progress in ADR and expressed hope that it would become a key platform for the Asian arbitration community to share ideas.
