Himachal Pradesh Government To Release Water to Delhi After Informing Haryana Government: Supreme Court

K Chakra Pani

The Supreme Court granted relief to Delhi by ordering the Himachal Pradesh Government to release water to the state,   after informing the Haryana Government.

A Bench of Justices PK Mishra and KV Viswanathan directed the Himachal Pradesh Government to release 137 cusecs of water, reaching Haryana, facilitating the flow towards Delhi.

The writ was filed by the State of Delhi seeking immediate release of water in light of the acute water shortage crisis caused by the severe heatwave conditions in the State.

The Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) submitted in its report that Haryana is also facing acute water shortage crisis, but there was no material put forth to prove the same.

The Court noted: “This Court directs the Respondent to release the water, informing Haryana prior to the same. The UYRB will measure such supply of water.”
