Justice Srikrishna Commission’s Recommendations Not Being Adhered To: Supreme Court to Maharashtra Government on Bombay Riots

K Chakra Pani

On May 6, the Supreme Court pulled up the Maharashtra Government over the non-adherence to the recommendations made by the Justice Srikrishna Committee on police reforms.

A division Bench of Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan observed the non-compliance with multiple orders of the Court issued earlier regarding compensation to the victims and disciplinary actions against a few police personnel.

Among the many recommendations include strict physical fitness tests, adequate housing facilities for the personnel and other list of measures to improve the efficiency of the police workforce post the 1993 Bombay Riots.

Despite clear orders on the previous date of hearing that the recommendations be ‘expeditiously implemented’, there was non-compliance by the State.
