On the 3rd of October 2023, the Bihar government took a significant step by approving a 10 percent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in both the judicial service and state-operated law colleges and universities. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The announcement followed closely on the heels of the government’s release of the initial data from the state’s caste survey, underscoring the swift action taken to implement this new policy. The data reveals that Extremely Backward Communities (EBCs) constitute 36.01% of the population, and an additional 27.12% are classified as Backward Classes. This information provides crucial insights into the demographic composition of the state.
Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretariat) S Siddhartha said, “The cabinet approved amendments in the guidelines of the State Judicial Services, 1951, allowing 10 per cent reservation for EWS category in judicial services and also in state-run law institutes and universities.”
In another significant move, the state cabinet gave the green light for the establishment of 100 veterinary hospitals across the state. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering healthcare infrastructure for animals and supporting the agricultural sector.
“A total of 100 first-class veterinary hospitals will be constructed in different districts of the state. Besides, there will be training centers at all these hospitals. For this, Rs 225 crore will be spent in 17 districts,”Siddhartha added.
