The Law Commission has gotten over 50 lakh responses online and ‘hard copies’ on the Uniform Civil Code. The deadline was till Friday. While the Commission studies the views, it would take a call on inviting the organisations for a personal hearing. Uttarakhand is set to come out with its own Code in the upcoming days.

The Uniform Civil Code is having a common law for all the citizens rather than on their religion. Personal laws and laws related to adoption, inheritance and succession are likely to be covered by this common code.

On June 14, the Commission started a new consultation process on the UCC by seeking views from stakeholders, including the public and recognised religious organisations. The preceding 21st Law Commission, which ended in August 2018, analysed the issue and solicited the views of all stakeholders on two occasions. Afterwards, a consultation paper on ‘Reforms of Family Law’ was issued in August 2018. The paper explained that though the diverse Indian culture should be celebrated, certain groups must not be ‘disprivileged’ in the process.

The current Law Commission released a public notice. “Since more than three years have lapsed from the date of issuance of the said consultation paper, bearing in mind the relevance and importance of the subject and also the various court orders on the subject, the 22nd Law Commission of India considered it expedient to deliberate afresh over the subject.”
