On Friday, Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, declared that Jammu& Kashmir (J&K) would soon have its own National Law University. He also disclosed that Rs. 50 Crores has been set out in the budget for the development of the said project. This project would raise the standard of legal education and increase student possibilities by bringing J&K up to par with other states that currently have NLU.
There has been plenty of debates about the concept of establishment of NLU in J&K for many years. The J&K National Law University Bill, which established the university, was approved by the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2019. But while the law awaited the governor’s approval, there were delays. Now, that it has been approved, it is expected that the construction of this 28th NLU will meet the expanding demands of the local legal community and provide top-notch legal education, excellent resources, and significant prospects for students’ professional development.
Law programs like LLB and BA.LL.B. are now offered by a variety of Public and Private Universities in Jammu & Kashmir. In addition to other private law schools like Kashmir Law College, they include the Central University of Kashmir, the University of Jammu, and the University of Kashmir.
